Revised 11-10-05  ABSTRACT The theories of leadership have a variety of similar definitions. Regardless of the theoryleadership is commonly defined as the manner in which a person influences or inspires others toaccomplish specific objectives (Dunn, 2009). It is often believed that true leaders also possessinherent abilities to make and implement strategic decisions, and to direct an organizationcohesively and coherently. Some of the common traits of a leader include attributes such as their  beliefs, values, ethics, character, knowledge, and skills. These attributes are typically at varyinglevels in each individual and affect the actions of a leader in carrying out and applying their leadership skills. The position of manager, supervisor, or team leader gives a level authority todirect the accomplishment of certain tasks and objectives in an organization. This authority doesnot make a leader; it simply provides a level of power within an organization to ensure the day today tasks and activities are accomplished . Leadership differs in that the followers see theimportance of the vision and want to achieve the high goals set forth by the organization(Avolio et al., 2009). This research was undertaken with the intent to examine the question of what makes a leader, from the perspective of the author.
