The Ultimate Rug Buying Guide Buying an area rug for the bedroom can make a world of difference in the look and feel of the room. However, there are quite a few things to consider when it comes to area rugs, including the type and material used, the placement and the color of the rug. Here is a guide to getting the perfect area rug for your bedroom. Determining Rug Placement ou really only have a couple of choices for the best rug placement in a bedroom. !n smaller bedrooms where there is only enough room for the bed, or where the bed is in the center of the room, the best  place is usually under the bed, leaving a border of #$ % inches. &ome bedroom rugs do not look good in the center but most will do the 'ob nicely. !f you have a larger bedroom, where the bed is on one side, and you have a dressing area, or even seating on the other side, the rug is often best in the middle of that space, dividing it from the rest of the room. (hoosing the Right &i)e Bedroom Rugs *hether you are putting the rug under the bed, in the center of the bedroom or you are using it to mark off a separate space, you still need to be concerned about the si)e of the rug. !f you are putting the rug in the center of the room under the bed, then the si)e will depend upon the type of bed you have. TWIN BED:  +t least -% for one bed or if you are placing it under two beds in the same room then you want to go at least - /. FULL-SIZE BED:  *ith a full$si)ed bed you can still use a -% rug if you are placing it under one bed,  but if you are placing it under two beds in the same room, then you need a little bigger than - /. 0he ne-t standard si)e up is %- / and you can use this since the full$si)ed bed is no longer than a twin, but is wider instead. QUEEN-SIZED BED:  *ith the standard si)e of a queen at around 12 by %2 you want bedroom rugs that are -% or larger. ou can certainly go larger. !t might even look a little better, particularly if you lay the rug down in the middle of the room and have around #$ % inches from the edge of the rug to the wall on all sides. KING-SIZED BED: *ith a king$si)ed bed you are going to have to go with bedroom rugs that are 3-4 or larger. !LIF RNI! KING:  0he (alifornia 5ing is / inches longer than the 5ing, However, you can still go with the standard 3-4 area rug si)e or larger. (hoosing the Perfect Rug &tyle0here are so many styles out there that it can be hard to list them all in one siting. 6ost rugs can be classified into the 2general2 or 2traditional2 area rug, and although they are often mistaken for 7riental rugs, they aren8t. 9ormally, these rugs will have fringes on the edge and come in either an oval shape, or sometimes other round shapes.0here are also Persian rugs and a few others that are based upon a particular style like country or colonial. However, for bedrooms, the best rug to use is the border rug, which normally does not have any fringe at the edge, and is meant to have a centerpiece like a bed or a couch and coffee table, with a   border around it. Bedroom Rugs and :iber (hoices 0here are two basic kinds of fibers that bedroom rugs come in. 0he first is natural fibers, which include (otton, ;ute and &ilk and then some rugs are made from synthetic fibers like polyester and nylon. Here are some basics on the types of fibers to give you an idea what you are looking for. &ynthetic :ibers Nyl#n:  9ylon is great because it resists staining, and holds up well under heavy$traffic situations. +lso, it comes in a lot of styles and colors. $#lye%te&:  0his material doesn8t hold up as well as nylon under lots of muddy shoes and foot traffic,  but it does retain its color without fading very well, and it is easy to clean. $#ly'&#'ylene:  0he biggest advantage to this material is that it may be used outdoors, but these types of rugs should be used in low$traffic areas.  9atural :ibers #tt#n:  (otton is great for high$traffic areas and comes in many colors and styles. !t is the natural equivalent to 9ylon. (ute:  0he terrific thing about ;ute is that it comes in some ama)ing natural colors, but this type of material is for showing and not for walking on or putting under beds. &o it won8t work in the bedroom unless you have it as a divider with no furniture on top of it. Sil):  &ilk is a great material for bedroom rugs. !t is a low$traffic material, but you can put furniture on it if you like. W##l:  *ool is a terrific rug for the bedroom because it is so soft under bare feet. !t is also strong and holds up well under furniture. 0he only disadvantage to wool is that it will shed when you first place the rug. (hoosing the Right (olor  (hoosing the right color for your bedroom rugs will depend upon the rest of your decor. ou might match the rug with your bedspread or choose a complementary color for the bedding, area rug and drapes.ou also should think about features like whether the rug has a backing that will prevent skidding. *hile this may not be important if it under the bed, it will be if you place it on the other side of the room. +lso, consider getting a rug pad when you purchase your rug. Pads will e-tend the life of your rug and keep spills off carpet.
