Translated by Boruch Merkur The Gemara states inMeseches Megilla (29a): “In theFuture Era the  shuls and batteimidrashos (the synagogues andstudy halls)” – “the miniaturesanctuary in the Diaspora”– “will be reestablished inEretz Yisroel, the Holy Land,”transported to the site of theHoly Temple on Mount Moria.That is, it is not just those who pray in the  shuls and those who learn Torah in the batteimidrashos who will be taken toEretz Yisroel [when Moshiachgathers the exiles to the HolyLand], nor will it be just theTorah and Mitzvos done thereand the Torah scrolls housedtherein that will go, but also the very stones of the buildings of the  shuls and battei midrashos ,as well as the wood and the earth– all of it will be taken to Eretz Yisroel, to the place of the HolyTemple on Mount Moria.The  davening of a Jew in  shul and his Torah study ina beis midrash (“reading andexpounding Torah in them,”as the Gemara puts it) has animpact on the physical spacearound him. Throughout theentire duration of the exile, Jewsdraw down holiness into eventhe buildings themselves – thestones, wood, and earth. Thisholiness remains within thestructure and its componentsand materials in a permanentmanner, established forever,until all of it is relocated in Eretz Yisroel and [more particularly]on the Temple Mount in Yerushalayim.Indeed, this is somethingtruly profound. That is,notwithstanding the fact that we are in exile – in fact, an exile within exile, for in additionto the exile of the descent of the soul into the body, weare also in exile in the simplesense – nevertheless, throughthe prayer and Torah study of Jews in the  shuls and batteimidrash , permanent sanctity isdrawn down within the physicalstructures themselves. Thisholiness remains in place, withinthe buildings and their materials,until it is all transported to Eretz Yisroel, to Yerushalayim on theTemple Mount. In effect, thestructure goes from one extremeto another – from an exile withinan exile to the ultimate height of holiness! […]If all this is said of   shuls and battei midrashos in general,how much more does it applyto the  shul and beis midrash  of my revered father-in-law,the Rebbe, the place where heserved G-d with his Torah andMitzvos and led his flock for adecade. Certainly not only those who  daven and learn Torah inthis  shul and beis midrash will be taken to Eretz Yisroel butalso the physical stone structureitself, the wood and the earth,together with the Ezras Nashim(the women’s section), as wellas everything found there, etc. –everything will be taken togetherto Eretz Yisroel, to the TempleMount in Yerushalayim. Know from where you came, where you aregoing, and before Whom youare destined to give a judgmentand accounting. From whereyou came – from a putrid drop; where you are going – to a placeof dust, maggots and worms; and before Whom you are destined togive a judgment and accounting– before the supreme King of Kings, the Holy One, blessed beHe.” An obvious question arisesupon reading the Mishna: Weknow that the Mishna’s wordingis always very exact. Many lessonsare learned in the Gemara fromthe seemingly additional wordsin a Mishna. Therefore, we mustunderstand the significance of the seemingly redundant phrasein the introduction “Reflectupon three things and you will not come to the hands of transgression.” Can’t we countourselves without it being spelledout for us?The Rebbe (in the summersichos of 5751) explained afascinating concept. The Mishnais teaching us that if we livea life filled with and focusedon Moshiach (the third BeisHaMikdash, third Geula etc.),the Yetzer Hara cannot get a Jew to sin.In the words of the Rebbe(VaEschanan 5751) “...Anadditional lesson and directiveconcerning Redemption can bederived also from the beginningof the third chapter of Pirkei Avos, ‘Look at three things’:“The term ‘three things’standing alone can be a hint tothe third Redemption and thethird Holy Temple, the thirdRedemption and the third HolyTemple, because each comprisesthe virtues of the first Redemptionas well as the second and the firstTemple together with the second.Furthermore, the double features will be combined as one.“The imperative of theMishna, ‘look,’ implies gazingintently, by deeply reflectingand contemplating mattersconcerning the third Redemptionand the third Beis HaMikdash(‘three things’), imbued withfeelings of anticipation andexceptional yearning, ‘I anticipatehis coming every day,’ implyingthat he will come every day, thisday, literally. How much moreso, now that we stand on thethreshold of Redemption, thegazing at these three mattersought to be increased and done with more vigor.“The suggestion can bemade that the one’s reflection onmatters of the third Redemptionand third Holy Temple (‘threematters’) has the capacity toaffect completeness to all of ourefforts within the ‘three pillars’– the three modes of expressionof Torah, service (prayer)and loving-kindness – whosefulfillment is through the three‘garments’ of the soul, thought,speech and action. When one’sthoughts are directed towardsthe three redemptions, one’sDivine service is unboundedand therefore beyond division. Without the limits and boundaries which delineate anddivide, one attains perfection inall of the three modes.“The Avodas Hashem of aJew must have three components:1) The Jew who is serving, 2)Hashem Who is being served,and 3) the world which is being worked on and transformed intoa dwelling place for Hashem.The only way to bring Moshiachis to remember that in additionto a person’s personal workof Davening and learning, hemust change this physical world(Acharei Mos-K’doshim 5751).”  Rabbi Avtzon is the Rosh Yeshivaof Yeshivas Lubavitch Cincinnati and a well sought after speaker and lecturer. The Latvian Lubavitchcommunity had many Chassidicpersonalities of note, many of whomwere killed by the Nazis. There were Chabad shuls and a wide network of Chabad activities. Thiscommunity had the privilege of the RebbeRayatz living there for several years. Many of thegreat Chassidim were part of this community. This all ended when the Communiststook over Latvia and began their religiouspersecution. One year later the Nazisconquered Latvia and finished the job. The magnificent community wasobliterated. Men, women and children, were annihilated.
