THESIS INCUBATION BRIDGE DESIGN APPROACH: MANUFACTURING IN THE UNITED STATES HAS BEEN IN A STEADILY DECLINE OVER THE PAST FEW DECADES, CAUSING EXTREME URBAN DECAY IN THE CITIES ONCE HOUSING THESE INDUSTRIES. THE COLLAPSE OF MANUFACTURING HAS CAUSED A SIGNIFICANT INCREASE IN POVERTY WITHIN THESE CITIES. POVERTY STRICKEN FAMILIES RARELY OBTAIN AN EDUCATION AT AND ABOVE A HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL CAUSING THEM TO REVERT TO LOW END PAYING JOBS. THE PROJECT BRIDGES COMMUNITIES BY INTEGRATING CENTRALIZED LEARNING AND PROFESSIONS IN A NEW PUBLIC ZONE IN WHICH WILL MERGE THE EXISTING INDUSTRIAL, MIXED USE COMMERCIAL, AND RESIDENTIAL ZONES AROUND WASHINGTON AVENUE AND SOUTH BROADWAY IN SOUTHERN PHILADELPHIA. AS MANUFACTURING INDUSTRIES MOVED OUT AND CLOSED, PHILADELPHIA HAS SUFFERED FROM LOSS OF JOBS, POVERTY, AND CRIME. I HAVE EXAMINED THE VAST GROWING TECHNOLOGY INDUSTRIES AND INCUBATORS TO ALLOW THE POPULATION OF PHILADELPHIA TO BECOME EDUCATED AND MANUFACTURE GOODS USING TODAYS MEANS OF TECHNOLOGY. �� �                                                                                            SECTIOND       

  • 5. LONDON INSTALLATION CHRONOS DESIGN APPROACH: AS PART OF THESIS, THE CLASS DID A 5 DAY CHARETTE TO DESIGN AND BUILD AN INSTALLATION IN THAMESMEAD, LONDON. THE INTENT WAS TO CREATE SOMETHING THAT THE COMMUNITY CAN INTERACT WITH WHILE LEARNING AND CONNECTING TO THE AREA OF THAMESMEAD. THE INSTALLATION REPRESENTS THE HISTORY OF THAMESMEAD. THE TIME LINE WAS TAKEN AND SEPARATED INTO THREE TIME LINES THAT PERTAINED TO ECONOMIC, SOCIAL, AND POLITICAL HISTORY OF THE AREA. THESE TIME LINES CHANGE DIRECTION WHEN A MAJOR EVENT IN HISTORY OCCURRED AND THE TIME LINES INTERSECT WHEN AN EVENT THAT WAS INSTRUMENTAL IN INTERSECTING TIME LINES OCCURRED.

DESIGN 4 IN A CLOUD DESIGN APPROACH: THE PROJECT IS A AFFORDABLE HOUSING PROJECT, COMPRISED OF MICRO UNITS, ONE BEDROOM, AND TWO BEDROOM UNITS LOCATED ON EAST HOUSTON STREET IN MANHATTAN, JUST WEST OF THE MELTZER TOWER. THE IDEA IS TO CREATE A CENTRAL CIRCULATION SPINE WITH HOUSING UNITS EXTRUDING OFF THE SPINE. THE MASS WAS THEN LIFTED TO FIFTY FEET WHICH IS THE HEIGHT OF THE BUILDINGS SURROUNDING IT. THIS ALLOWS THE HOUSING UNITS TO ALL HAVE A VIEW ABOVE ITS SURROUNDINGS AND ALLOWS FOR AMPLE NATURAL LIGHT TO PENETRATE. THIS ALSO ALLOWS FOR THE GROUND PLANE TO BECOME A PUBLIC PLAZA AND FOR THE SURROUNDING BUILDINGS TO STILL HAVE VIEWS AND LIGHT COMING FROM THE SOUTH. DN UP UP DN DN UP UP DN
  • 7. DESIGN 3 GREEN POINT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL DESIGN APPROACH: THE PROJECT STARTED WITH THE INITIAL IDEA OF SEPARATING PROGRAM FROM CIRCULATION AND PUBLIC PROGRAM FROM PRIVATE PROGRAM. THE SOLID PART OF THE FORM IS THE PROGRAMMATIC ELEMENTS. THE SOLID PART IS THEN DIVIDED INTO TWO BARS OF PROGRAM. THE LOWER ONE BEING PUBLIC PROGRAM AND THE FLOATING BAR THE PRIVATE PROGRAM. THESE TWO SOLID BARS ARE THEN CONNECTED BY A TRANSPARENT MASS THAT WEAVES AROUND THE SOLID GEOMETRIC FORMS. THE SITE IS LOCATED AT THE CORNER OF DUPONT AND FRANKLYN ROAD IN GREEN POINT, NEW YORK. 1 2 1 2 3 4 3 4

  • 9. DESIGN 6 WILLIAMSBURG PUBLIC LIBRARY DESIGN APPROACH: THE COMMUNITY OF WILLIAMSBURG IS AN AREA THAT HAS MANY ARTISTIC AND MUSICALLY INCLINED RESIDENTS. WILLIAMSBURG HOUSES MANY GALLERY'S, BARS, AND NIGHT CLUBS. TO CONNECT THE LIBRARY WITH THE COMMUNITY, THE LIBRARY TRANSFORMS AT NIGHT INTO AN OUTDOOR MUSIC VENUE. THE LIBRARY ALSO FEATURES GALLERIES FOR TEMPORARY ART AND MUSIC EXHIBITIONS. THE IDEA IS TO STACK THE PROGRAM VERTICALLY FROM PUBLIC ON THE BOTTOM TO PRIVATE AT THE TOP. THE DIFFERENT PROGRAMS ARE THEN SHIFTED IN HORIZONTALLY TO CREATE A STEPPING EFFECT TO DIAGONALLY CONNECT ALL THE SPACES.
