  Lyme disease  INTRODUCTION:DEFINITION: lyme disease ( L.D.) is an infectious usually non contagious metazoonotic disease. the onset and duration of infection ranges from inapparent to acute to insidious to chronic. SYNONYMS: The disease is also called lyme borreliosis. ETIOLOGY: L.D. caused by spirochete borrelia burgdoferi  GEOGRAPHICAL DISTRIBUTION IN ANIMALS-The disease has been thought to be present in north America since centuries. IN MAN-the disease is most endemic in residents of north America , with most of the cases in Texas . * The disease has also been recorded in most European countries, Australia, China and Japan. * In India, the status of disease needs to be ascertained particularly in the light of sizable population suffering with arthritis ailments. EPIDEMIOLOGY  * among domesticated animal  B. Burgdoferi  primarily causes recognizable signs of disease in dogs, horse and cattle.* Apart from these animals deer, racoons, many avian species as well as rodents are affected.
